Face-to-Face Education in the Digital Age

A series of conversations and workshops on maximizing the benefits of face-to-face learning experiences

As we reimagine higher education, learning, and technology, we are called to explore the value of the residential experience including the benefits of real-time, face-to-face interactions between students and teachers. What is the unique potential of the in-person encounter for human learning? How can we leverage this potential in technology-enhanced courses and curricula? How can we design face-to-face learning experiences with diverse peer, social groups, and faculty in classrooms, research labs and community settings so that they enrich our students’ minds and lives?

The TRC’s 2013-14 series Face-to-Face Education in the Digital Age explores the human dimension of the Flipped Classroom and builds on and deepen the conversations begun this past year.


Throughout the 2013-14 academic year, the TRC will host a series of events which examine the benefits of real-time, face-to-face interactions between students and teachers. The following is a sample of these events:

  • Workshops featuring nationally and internationally renown speakers
  • Course Design Institute, a five-day hands-on workshop in May, where teachers design or substantially redesign a course to promote significant, long-term learning, usually through “flipping” the classroom.
  • Hybrid Challenge for Engaged Learning, a year-long learning community for faculty from across the University who are developing hybrid, technology‐enhanced courses.
  • Nucleus, a year-long learning community designed to help faculty improve STEM education in introductory-level courses at UVa using research-based pedagogies and assessment—and to help faculty and departments sustain improvements.
  • Contemplative Pedagogy Program, a year-long learning community designed to support UVa faculty members wishing to systematically integrate contemplation into their courses.
