Departmental Workshops

In our continuing effort to promote excellence in teaching at U.Va., the Teaching Resource Center offers a variety of workshops to TAs and faculty that can be tailored to the specific needs of your department. They are offered upon request to individual departments or to the entire teaching community. Topics might include any of the following, in whatever combination you find helpful:

  • General discussion leading
  • Small-group techniques for discussion sections
  • Lecturing briefly in labs or discussion sections
  • Lecturing to entire classes
  • Oral presentation techniques
  • Engaging students actively in learning
  • Questioning techniques (asking open-ended questions, etc.)
  • Generating enthusiasm and maintaining students' interest
  • Teaching students to solve problems
  • Dealing with classroom crises and problems (including challenges to your authority, offensive students, etc.)
  • Identifying and accommodating students with learning disabilities
  • Techniques for effective tutoring
  • Planning a course
  • Creating a syllabus
  • Balancing teaching and studying
  • Assigning, grading, and commenting on students' papers
  • Grading, various aspects
  • Other topics as fit your needs

The TRC can offer a workshop in any format you like, including a departmental setting, a lunch or other relatively unstructured discussion, a more formal presentation, or whatever other arrangement suits your purposes.

In order to provide a workshop, the Teaching Resource Center staff needs a little assistance, mostly with making contacts and refining the topics to be covered. Please contact the TRC for further details.
