2010 Faculty Program All new and returning faculty and postdoctoral fellows are invited.
Wednesday, August 18, 2010 8:15-8:50 Check-In/Registration & Refreshments
How we teach the first days of class affects the entire course. How do you envision the atmosphere and interactions in your course? Share your ideas for successful beginnings, meet faculty from other departments and schools, and receive useful University resource information.
With the goal of interactively engaging students in a large lecture hall, the presenter will discuss techniques for making lecture notes, effective PPT slides, and presenting material in a manner that engenders understanding, curiosity, and good will. He will also discuss methods for assessing student understanding during and after class.
Online anonymity and the constant nature of media connection have begun to redefine the standards of civil discourse in our classrooms – in interesting and sometimes challenging ways. During this working-lunch session we’ll discuss ways to promote effective classroom discussion in the age of cell phones, laptops, polarized politics and shifting norms for communication. A few short, provocative cases will frame our discussion of ways to engage students in respectful, civil discourse in an environment that fosters deep learning and critical thinking.
As a UVa faculty member has said about teaching our diverse student population, "Sensitivity isn't enough; you need strategies." In this workshop, participants will learn how different backgrounds shape students’ classroom experiences and explore successful strategies for creating inclusive learning environments.

11:10-12:30 Making Your Presentations Count Do you give lectures…deliver papers…conduct meetings…present reports? Participate in exercises geared to reduce stage fright, increase concentration, as well as center and strengthen your voice.
Developing strong and effective mentoring relationships is one of the most important, yet often overlooked, markers of individual success within academe. This panel discussion will help you explore strategies for building and cultivating relationships with individuals or groups who can share knowledge, offer encouragement, provide feedback, and connect you with people, resources and opportunities.
Learn about services provided by ITC (Information Technology & Communication) that can help you with technology integration in your teaching and research. We’ll discuss your computing support options, technology-enhanced classrooms, UVaCollab, the online course management and collaboration system, and research computing resources available to you.
