Morning faculty sessions after the Welcome remarks will be held in Old Cabell Hall, Room 107, located at the end of the lobby registration area. Afternoon faculty sessions will be held in the Reading Room of Rouss-Robertson Hall, the first building on the right when exiting Old Cabell.

How we teach the first days of class affects the entire course. Share your hints for successful beginnings, meet faculty from other departments and schools, and receive useful University resource information.

11:05-12:30 Developing and Presenting Effective Lecture Courses
Dennis Proffitt, Professor (Psychology)
The presenter will consider several aspects of preparing and presenting effective lectures.

12:30-12:40 Break; BOX LUNCHES are available outside Room 107 for the 12:40-2:00 working-lunch session. Pick up your lunch and proceed to the Reading Room in Rouss-Robertson Hall for all afternoon sessions.

12:40-2:00 Facilitating Classroom Discussions

During this working-lunch session, we’ll discuss general principles and specific techniques for promoting effective classroom discussions, including creating a conducive environment, encouraging and evaluating student participation, and structuring discussions.

2:05-3:30 Making Your Presentations Count

Do you give lectures…deliver papers…conduct meetings…present reports? Participate in exercises geared to reduce stage fright, increase concentration, and center and strengthen your voice.

We’ll discuss your computing support options, technology-enhanced classrooms, and UVaCollab, the online course management and collaboration system.

This discussion-oriented session will cover a framework for understanding and leveraging individual differences across multiple dimensions of your professional academic life. It will provide you with tools to better understand both your own preferences around learning and embracing new opportunities, as well as those of others.

Note: Part of this session will be a working lunch with box lunches available.

Developing strong and effective mentoring relationships is one of the most important, yet oft overlooked, early markers of individual success within academe. This session will help you start thinking through how you will identify—much less ask— individuals who can share their knowledge, give emotional and moral encouragement, provide feedback, help you locate information, and inform you of resources and opportunities.
