Course Design Institute: Creating Effective Community Engagement Courses
Dorothe Bach, Faculty Consultant and Assistant Professor, Teaching Resource Center/ Department of German
Deandra Little, Faculty Consultant and Assistant Professor, Teaching Resource Center/ Department of English

In this two-day workshop, faculty participants will design or substantially redesign a community engagement course so that it promotes significant, longterm learning. The workshop follows “backward design” principles, which differ significantly from more traditional, content-driven models.

Individually and in small learning teams, you will:

  • Define meaningful, integrated course goals,
  • Explore novel ways to assess these goals,
  • Develop activities for the classroom and community aligned with them, and,
  • Map out the structure of the course.

This Institute is sponsored by the Office of University and Community Partnerships.
