Designing Rubrics for Teaching, Grading, and Assessment

Perhaps you have never used a rubric for teaching and grading before, much less designed one. But you’ve heard that rubrics can be an effective teaching tool and want to try one in your course. Or you’ve been asked to design a rubric for assessment purposes.

• How do you begin?
• How do you know when you have a good rubric?
• How do you avoid common pitfalls?

We will address these questions and more as we show you how to build rubrics from scratch or modify existing ones. In addition, we will present information on assessment/grading software. (We have extended our pilot-test of Waypoint, software that facilitates instructor use of rubrics in grading student work and in giving feedback to students, as well as inassessing student learning.)
