A
PhD candidate in sociology, Carey Sargent is primarily interested in how
racial, class and gender inequalities are reproduced through cultural
institutions. As a drummer and local rock musician, her research looks
at the role of music in the formation of social identities and boundaries.
Through mentoring student-athletes and teaching sociology, she attempts
to enable students to think critically about the world around them, to
translate between their personal experiences and larger social issues,
and to see the possibilities for greater human freedom. Teaching, researching,
and performing are the sources of creativity and motivation in her life,
along with her partner, friends and family.
