Candidate Qualifications
Necessary qualifications for the position of Graduate Student Associate normally include teaching experience at the University of Virginia, excellent teaching ability, an interest in teaching, initiative, and effective interpersonal communication skills. Graduate Student Associates may be specialists in any discipline, and we attempt to hire staff members from a variety of departments and schools.
Application Process
An
application consists of the following:
-
a letter explaining what you can offer the Teaching Resource Center, detailing relevant experience, and describing all other UVa work commitments you plan during the same time period
-
your
curriculum vitae
- a recommendation letter from your graduate advisor, or dissertation director. This letter should comment on your teaching, support your interest in this work, and confirm that working a few hours per week as a GSA will not slow your degree progress. If you already work for the University, exceptions to the 20-hour work per week limit can be made with the support of your Graduate Advisor (for more information about the 20-hour rule, see UVa Wage Authorization or, for graduate students in Arts & Sciences, the GSAS Handbook.)
Applications may be submitted at any time for future consideration. Applicants who wish to be considered for the coming academic year should submit their applications by early April. Hiring is normally done on an annual basis; under exceptional circumstances, a semester-long appointment may be made. You may email your completed application to fsf@virginia.edu or mail or hand-deliver it to the TRC:
