| How to Apply |
|
Candidates
may nominate themselves or accept nomination by their departmental chair.
To apply, a candidate must submit to the Teaching Resource Center by the
first Monday following Spring Break (March 10, 2008) seven copies of the
following (typically no more than 10 pages in length, total):
- Reflective
statement about teaching, including how the candidate's teaching and
research interact
- Project
focus for the fellowship year: Which course will you reconsider, or
what new course will you develop? What issues or concerns related to
your teaching and your students learning do you find most provocative?
It is better to focus on one course than on several.
- Statement of personal goals for general teaching improvement as a University Teaching Fellow. Beyond the work you will do on your new or revised course, what do you hope to gain from your year as a University Teaching Fellow? What will you contribute to the group of six Fellows? What do you expect to gain from your interactions with the other Fellows and with your Senior Mentor?
- Brief curriculum
vitae, including a list of courses taught at U.Va.
- From the
candidate's departmental chair: Written recommendation of the candidate
as both a teacher and a researcher and of the course design proposal.
The best supporting letters indicate something of the candidates
apparent viability for tenure in the case of tenure-track applicants.
Among other
factors, the committee considers the quality of the focal project, including
the role of the course(s) in the departmental curriculum, and enthusiasm
for teaching conveyed by applicants' statements, with an eye toward balance
among disciplines.
