Workshops: Reflective Questions

The following sets of questions are designed to help guide your reflections about the workshops you attend. The questions are not meant to form an exhaustive list, but rather to act as a springboard to questions of interest to you.

General Questions (applicable to all workshops)

  • What did you expect to learn from the workshop?
  • What were the most interesting things you learned in the workshop? What did you find surprising? Why?
  • What would you like to remember about the workshop several years from now?
  • What questions do you now have about this topic? Where or to whom might you pose them?
  • What would you change about this event for future participants? What didn't work for you, and how would you improve the event? Why? What more would you have liked to have learned from it?
  • How was this workshop facilitated, and how might you use those skills in either your teaching or future workshop presentations?

In the Classroom (workshops on teaching and learning)

  • What is one specific teaching technique or idea that you could immediately apply to your classes to improve student learning?
  • How has your view of teaching been affected by the workshop?
  • What is one thing you most want students in your class to take from your teaching, and how has the workshop furthered that goal?

For the Profession (workshops on professional development other than teaching)

  • How might you use one point from the workshop in your own professional development? Think about specific ways in which to apply this knowledge.
  • How did this workshop change your expectations of faculty roles and responsibilities?
  • What steps has this workshop motivated you to take to enhance your career?

At the University (workshops on navigating and excelling in an academic setting)

  • What is one thing the workshop you learned regarding the relationship between faculty, students, and administrators?
  • How does what you learned in this workshop relate to some university-related issue reported in the media, e.g. The Chronicle of Higher Education, The Washington Post, The New York Times, etc.?
