Alan Howard
Project Summary (1998-2001)

Alan Howard’s DTP work focuses on the U.Va. American Studies Program. His courses run the gamut of American Culture from popular culture to science and technology to the 1930s. His work on College-wide initiatives include these:

American Studies Informational Community: to link faculty together electronically through the construction of a very large database and retrieval system useful to any teacher or researcher working in American topics and including the archiving and retrieval of “texts” in any digital medium: print, audio, video, and graphics.

  • Lewis and Clark Bicentennial Committee: students will provide web support for faculty teaching the new collaborative, web-enhanced course, “American West(s)”
  • New American Studies Committee: redesigning the American Studies Programs to involve more departments, more faculty, and more students.
  • International Institute for American Studies Project: to spearhead the University's effort to establish U.Va. as a major resource for teaching and research in American Studies.
