NEH Distinguished Teaching Professors

Brian Balogh
Project Summary (2004-2007)

Brian Balogh has initiated the American Studies Digital Consortium. This working group draws upon professors from a broad range of disciplines and is supported by library staff. The objective of the consortium is to create, by June 2007, a series of web sites that will be used by consortium members and by faculty across Grounds in their teaching. In 2005-6, the consortium is building two web sites. Both draw upon a wide range of primary sources.
The first examines military recruiting in the United States from World War I to the present. It will provide images of recruiting posters, digitized video of commercials, photographs and print documents. It will also collect data on recruitment targets and actual enlistment.

The second web site is a civil rights timeline that will cover key moments in race relations from Reconstruction to the present. It will feature landmark legal decisions and press (print, then television) coverage of key moments in the quest for civil rights. Initially we will focus on African American and Indian history. Additional minority groups will be added later in the project.
